In 1608 the Virgin Mary appeared to shepherds in Šiluva, Lithuania, asking for a church to be rebuilt on the site where an earlier Catholic church had stood. It is one of the earliest approved Marian apparitions in Northern Europe.

In 1973 Sister Agnes Sasagawa of the Handmaids of the Eucharist in Akita, Japan, received messages from a statue of the Virgin Mary that later wept and bled. The local bishop declared the events supernatural in 1984.
